As Pete Crow-Armstrong Tops the Early 2027 Fantasy Baseball Rankings, Sarasota's League Diehards Are Planning Draft Season Around Spring Training

October baseball in Sarasota usually means watching somebody else's city celebrate. The Orioles, who have spent their springs at Ed Smith Stadium since 2010, finished 79 and 82 this year, fourth in the AL East and out of the race by late September. So the local rooting interest drifted down the road to North Port, where the Braves' spring home at CoolToday Park suddenly looks like a very good address after Atlanta beat the Phillies in the wild card round and walked into a Division Series with the Dodgers.

For the fantasy crowd, the bigger news arrived on a laptop. Yahoo Sports published its early look at 2027 rankings on September 25 and put Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, PCA to most fantasy players, at No. 1, ahead of Shohei Ohtani, after a season of 45 home runs, 107 RBIs and 41 stolen bases at age 24. ESPN's own early top 50 a week later kept Ohtani first, which tells you how open the argument still is. Anyone in a keeper league has a call to make before winter, and the sensible first stop is a live fantasy baseball ranking like RotoWire's, which lets a manager flip between preseason outlooks and season to date numbers, then rebuild the whole list around their own league's categories.

Draft night here is really a March event

This is what makes Sarasota different from most fantasy markets. Serious leagues draft late, after camp has settled the position battles, and camp is exactly when this stretch of the Gulf Coast fills up with baseball. The Braves have already posted a 2027 Grapefruit League slate at CoolToday Park that opens on February 21 against the Cardinals. The Orioles will be back at the Ed a few weeks before an Opening Day currently set for March 24.

A league that drafts on the last weekend of March can watch a good chunk of its sleeper list in person first. That's a scouting edge a league in Ohio simply doesn't have, and it's why the smartest commissioners in town schedule the draft around a home game rather than the other way round.

There is one asterisk. Baseball's collective bargaining agreement expires on December 1, and a lockout is widely expected as the owners push for a salary cap. The last one, in 2021 and 2022, ran 99 days and shoved the start of spring games back by weeks. Any league planning its draft party around a specific Grapefruit League weekend should pencil it in, not put down a deposit.

Where the drafts actually happen

Ask around and the honest answer is wherever there are enough screens and a long table. Harry's Sports Bar and Grill on the South Trail is the obvious candidate, with 63 TVs and a regular crowd that already includes the Sarasota County Gator Club on football Saturdays. Downtown, Brewster's Gastropub has a long bar and a covered outdoor area with its own big screen. Evie's on Main Street is built around televisions in every sightline. Big Top Brewing at Fruitville Commons, with its fire pit and multiple bars, suits leagues that would rather draft outside in a Florida March than in a back room.

None of them advertises a formal fantasy draft night, so the move is to call ahead, ask for the big table on a quiet weeknight and promise the server a decent tab. Twelve people staring at phones for three hours order more wings than you would think.

How the regulars prep before the room fills up

The managers who win these leagues tend to do the same unglamorous thing: they build their own board weeks before the draft instead of trusting the default list in the app. A national list in the fall is only the starting point. Scoring changes everything. In a roto league that counts steals, PCA's 41 bags make him nearly impossible to pass on, while a points league that barely rewards speed can tilt the top pick back toward Ohtani or a power bat.

From there, the routine is simple enough to do over coffee. Mark the players you would keep, and write down the round each one would cost you. Flag anyone whose role could change over the winter, because free agency and trades will move dozens of names before February. Note every spot where your league's scoring departs from the default settings. Then revisit the list once camp opens, when injury news and position battles start arriving daily. By the time the draft comes around, the board in your hands should look noticeably different from the one you printed in October.

It also helps to ignore October itself. The Cubs were swept by the Padres in two games in the wild card round, and PCA and Alex Bregman went a combined 0 for 15. Postseason at bats don't count toward anybody's fantasy totals, and a two game slump says very little about a player who finished on top of ESPN's final Player Rater.

A long winter, then a very short drive

For most of the country, draft prep is something you do from the couch in February. Here, it comes with a schedule of exhibition games a short drive away and a ballpark that a USA Today fan survey once named the most liked venue in spring training. Do the homework now, keep an eye on the labor talks after Thanksgiving, and save the real arguments for a March afternoon when the Orioles are back on the field and your league has a reservation for twelve.
