The survey collected responses from 1,000 US based players, and it was discovered that many players’ superstitions still have an impact on their gaming habits.

Key Findings

The following are some key statistics from the study in regard to the prevalence of superstitions when it comes to gambling:

• The majority (58%) of surveyed players stated that they had at least one gambling superstition which they regularly used.
• Surveyed players stated that on average each player has three personal superstitions or rituals associated with their gambling.
• Approximately 27% of surveyed players reported that there is at least one day during the week where they will not gamble. The most common reasons for this included that it was “bad luck” due to losing money the previous time they gambled.
• A total of approximately 19% of surveyed players indicated that they have at least one object, e.g., coin or piece of jewelry, etc. that they believe is good luck and therefore use it as part of their gambling ritual.
• A total of approximately 15% of surveyed players stated that they would move to a new location within the casino to either sit down or begin using another gaming device immediately upon experiencing a significant losing streak.
• Only 9% of respondents identified themselves as being “not superstitious at all.”

Some of the most popularly mentioned superstitions include blowing on the dice, tapping the display screen of a slot machine, and avoiding particular numbers.

Players younger than 25 years old are marginally more likely to report that their use of rituals was based on their perception that other people (social media influencers) do it too. Older players have been more inclined to identify their superstitious behaviors as being based upon family traditions which are passed from one generation to another. There appears to be a connection between superstition and session duration; players who stated that they follow some type of ritual were in their gaming sessions approximately 22 percent longer, compared to players who stated they did not follow any rituals, regardless if they were playing for wins or losses.
