Prime Video’s trip back to Middle-earth is not drifting into 2027 after all. The latest reporting points to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power returning in 2026, which is exactly the update fans had been waiting for after months of uncertainty. Amazon had already officially renewed the show for a third season in February 2025, and current coverage now says the new batch of episodes is on track for this year, even if an exact date still has not been announced.

It will premiere in 2026, one year earlier than stated

Good news for the fans. For viewers who feared a longer drought, this is a real boost. The series debuted in 2022, came back for season 2 in 2024, and now appears set to maintain that two-year rhythm with season 3 in 2026. Different specialized media have reported that the show will arrive later this year instead of 2027, as it was initially said, with Prime Video determined to keep that release pattern intact. That means the gap is still long by normal TV standards, but not disastrous for a production of this scale, where post-production, effects work, and global rollout take enormous time.

There is also a creative reason for fans to be optimistic. Amazon’s official synopsis says season 3 jumps forward several years and lands at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, with the Dark Lord trying to forge the One Ring that will tilt Middle-earth in his favor. That is a much more charged dramatic setup than a pure bridge season, as it pushes the story toward one of the defining moments in Tolkien lore. The reported cast additions and the season-wrap update from December 2025 only add to the sense that the machinery is already deep into the final stretch before release.

Amazon is sticking to the show despite so-so reviews

The more interesting part of this story is that Amazon never doubted its product. In its official renewal announcement, the company said The Rings of Power had attracted more than 170 million viewers worldwide and remained one of its strongest drivers of new Prime membership sign-ups. That is the kind of internal metric that matters more to a streaming giant than online noise. Amazon also tied the project to a multi-season commitment from the start, and its 2017 rights announcement made clear that the company acquired global television rights to The Lord of the Rings with a long-game plan in mind.

However, the reception has not been as spectacular as they thought. The show has always looked like an event series, but audience feeling has been split. On Rotten Tomatoes, season 2 sits at 85% with critics and 58% on the Popcornmeter, while Metacritic lists a 67 score for season 2 as “generally favorable,” but hardly the kind of overwhelming acclaim that puts it in contention to be “one of the best.” The series is not a flop by any means, but it has also never escaped arguments about pacing, writing choices, and how freely it interprets Tolkien. Amazon clearly believes the scale, prestige, and franchise value still make the investment worthwhile.

That belief seems even firmer now because the company appears to see the show as a flagship brand asset rather than a week-to-week ratings gamble. Recent coverage has suggested Amazon remains committed to finishing the originally envisioned five-season arc, even as people keep wondering whether the cost can be justified. From the company’s point of view, though, The Rings of Power is a prestige franchise tied to one of the most recognizable names in modern storytelling, and platforms rarely walk away from that lightly once the infrastructure is built and the global audience is already in place.

Warner Bros.’ The Hunt for Gollum production continues

However, The Rings of Power is not the only The Lord of the Rings product still ongoing. Andy Serkis is directing the movie and returning as Gollum, while Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens remain involved on the producing and writing side.

Recent reports suggest that the film is actively advancing rather than sitting in limbo. The latest casting updates, for example, have confirmed that both Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen will be returning as Frodo and Gandalf, and that Jamie Dornan will be the new Aragorn in place of Viggo Mortensen.
