Key Chorale’s 41st Season Opens with a Royal Celebration

From the 1727 coronation of King George II to King Charles III in 2023, Key Chorale presents some of the most striking music inspired by royalty.

Presented by Key Chorale September 4, 2025

Join Key Chorale and a full orchestra on September 27th at Church of the Palms for Coronation—a radiant kickoff to the season featuring music fit for kings and queens. From the grandeur of King George II’s 1727 coronation to the recent ceremony of King Charles III, this program spans centuries of regal inspiration. Expect majestic works that stir the soul, plus modern tributes drawn from beloved royal dramas like The Crown, The Tudors, and the Oscar-winning The King’s Speech.

“We’re thrilled to welcome acclaimed soprano Mary Wilson, whose voice brings unmatched brilliance to this repertoire,” says Artistic Director Joseph Caulkins. Opera News praised her “luminous voice” and The St. Louis Post-Dispatch hailed her “bravura performance” that earned a spontaneous standing ovation.

And, if you’ve never experienced Mozart’s Coronation Mass, now’s your chance. In just 30 minutes, he delivers an astonishing amount of musical beauty—complete with festive brass, timpani, and the Agnus Dei, considered one of his finest soprano arias. It’s a feast for the ears and the heart.

You’ll also hear John Tavener’s Song for Athene: Alleluia. May Flights of Angels Sing Thee to Thy Rest combines the spiritual and the mystical with chant-like melodies over a Byzantine-like drone. It has become Tavener’s best-known choral work after it was sung at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997 in Westminster Abbey as her cortège left the Abbey.
