On Saturday, February 15th, Key Chorale along, with a full orchestra, will present Verdi’s Requiem, a darkly dramatic 90-minute emotional roller coaster ride. NPR called it “one of the most sublime and terrifying works in the repertoire.” Few works in classical music offer the excitement of opera, the thrill of the symphony, the power of the chorus and glorious virtuosic solos. Experience a truly epic performance, with Maestro Caulkins leading four world-class opera soloists and over 150 musicians on stage.
“This is such a monumental work, full of drama and excitement,” said Maestro Caulkins. “Key Chorale last performed this work under the direction of Dr. Daniel Moe as his last concert as Artistic Director. So, it has a special historical importance to Key Chorale and was an obvious choice for our 40th Anniversary season. It is a tour de force for the choir and a stunningly powerful masterwork to share with our community.”
A local favorite, baritone Jamal Sarikoki, is back with Key Chorale for his second of three concerts this season. He will be a featured vocalist alongside three world-class opera soloists, Olivia Vote, Jonathan Burton, and Rebecca Krynski Cox for this concert, and then again for the season finale Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” on May 10. As an oratorio singer, Jamal has sung the baritone roles in Bach’s Mass in B Minor, Beethoven’s Mass in C Major, Bruckner’s Te Deum, Mendelssohn’s Elijah and many other works. Olivia Vote has been lauded for her “theatrical magnetism” and “her big, rich voice.” On the concert stage, she was heard in Rossini’s Stabat Mater with The Choral Arts Society of Washington, D.C. under the baton of Antony Walker, and in Durefle’s Requiem at The Kennedy Center.
Jonathan Burton, a protégé of Lorin Maazel, sang with the famed maestro in multiple productions at the Castleton Festival, concerts in Washington, D.C., and in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the reopening of Teatro La Fenice.
Rebecca Krynski Cox has been hailed by The New York Times as a “vibrant soprano…with a secure, appealing sound and eye-opening volume,” Rebecca Krynski Cox recently appeared with North Carolina Opera in their Opera in the Park season opening concert. The performance:
