Tenth Street Coffee Satisfies Caffeine Cravings in West Palmetto

When you think of Palmetto, the first thing to come to mind might not be a hip, trendy coffee shop. But as you drive down 10th Street, you'll eventually spot a white brick building with a black awning and doors, and a vibrant mural on one side. That is Tenth Street Coffee, and it's always filled with customers.
On my way to Emerson Point Preserve, I stumbled across the charming shop and decided I needed a caffeine fix. I chose my old standby, an iced vanilla latte with nonfat milk, but noticed the shop had all sorts of flavors, non-dairy milks and specialty drinks. There's also an extensive food menu, from hot sandwiches to pastries and the ever-so-Instagram-worthy avocado toast.

The decor is cool— the building used to be Palmetto Meat Shop for 40 years and was renovated with recessed lighting, comfy leather chairs and couches, and an expansive counter bar top where you can set down your laptop and get to work. There was also a mic stand and small stage—the shop hosts trivia and karaoke nights throughout the week. I happily sat down to enjoy my cup of joe and listen to the soft, chill beats that were playing overhead.
"During the pandemic in 2020, we missed seeing the people we shared our amazing hometown with," says owner and pastor of the affiliated Church on the Rock Tad Mathews. "So, when the opportunity for a coffee shop became available in West Palmetto, we knew it was our opportunity to build an environment to bring our friends and family together again."

Tenth Street Coffee goes beyond just offering great coffee and food, though—it's all for a good cause. The shop owners partnered with Gainesville company Sweet Water Coffee Exchange, a company that sells 100 percent organic coffee beans grown by farmers in third world countries like Guatemala, Colombia, Ethiopia and Laos. A portion of every cup sold at Tenth Street Coffee goes directly to these farmers to support their daily needs and businesses. The shop also hosts mission Mondays, where 100 percent of that day's proceeds go toward a local charity.
"One cup can really go a long way," says Mathews.
Check out Tenth Street Coffee at 1810 10th St. W., Palmetto. Hours are Monday-Thursday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
