Spice Boys Is Making Beverages Now, Too
The Sarasota food truck Spice Boys is making some of the city's best food, with a rave-worthy eggplant sabich, an excellent falafel pita, pita "tacos" stuffed with chicken shawarma, and ultra-creamy hummus decked out with caponta, roasted artichokes and other toppings.
Now the truck is getting into the liquid game, selling two different carbonated drinks when it sets up: an apple rose tonic and a "botanical kola."
In addition to apple and rosewater, the tonic is flavored with vanilla, cinnamon, orange peel and ginger, giving it a slightly sweet taste similar to a cider or a chilled mulled wine. The "kola," meanwhile, is made with lime, bergamot (a type of citrus), orange peel, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and coconut sugar. It's less sweet than the tonic, with a complex, herbal flavor.
The drinks were created by Florence Schmitt, who works at the truck with her husband, head chef Steve Schmitt, and manager Carl Kolber. They come in snazzy glass bottles that should definitely be kept and reused.
To catch up with Spice Boys, follow the truck on Facebook or Instagram. This week, you can find them at CitySide, 700 Cocoanut Ave., Sarasota, on Thursday, April 8, and at Calusa Brewing, 5701 Derek Ave., Sarasota, on Friday, April 9.
This Saturday, April, 10 the truck will be parked at Pineapple Yoga + Cycling Studio, 517 S. Pineapple Ave., Sarasota, as part of the studio's regular outdoor markets that feature vendors selling spa treatments, nail and hair care products, jewelry, accessories and more. You can preorder online ahead of time and set your pickup time, or just order at the truck and do a little shopping while you're there.
