One of the latest local arts groups to announce the coming 2022-23 season: Sarasota Contemporary Dance, entering its 17^th year with a theme of “Reclaim.”

As with other organizations, the past two years spent dealing with Covid disruption have sometimes affected the SCD performance schedule and approach. But the company is now stepping forward to “reclaim the stage, stories, and the spirit of the company in a performance season devoted to empowerment, collaboration and forward motion,” according to a press release.

SCD plans to do that by prioritizing diversity through collaboration with local musicians, while at the same time the four-show season will revive pieces from its repertoire and welcome guest choreographers who will bring original works to Sarasota audiences.

Artistic director Leymis Bolaños Willmott said in the release that “We are motivated by what we have overcome and the assurance that this company not only thrives locally, but can expand its reach beyond our community.”

All performances will be held at the Jane B. Cook Theatre at the FSU Center for Performing Arts; there will be performances at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, with a 3 p.m. matinee on Sundays. Virtual tickets will also be available.

Starting off the season will be “Voices—Rising Choreographers,” Oct. 13-16. This year’s roster of emerging to mid-career artists includes Alexis Diggs, Rebecca Eurom, Matthew Sommers, Sarah Emory, and SCD company member Xiao-Xuan Yang Dancigers. The production will also feature a pre-show performance by SCDE, SCD’s training company, through a residency program welcoming Laura Chambers that comes with a new work for them to present.

SCD continues to collaborate with other arts groups in its next offerings, “SCD+enSRQ,” Dec. 1-4. Working with enSRQ’s founders, musicians Samantha Bennett and George Nickson, these programs will explore rhythms, dance and song from around the world, with a scenic design by St. Petersburg-based artist Sharon McCaman.

“Dance Makers” is up next, Jan. 26-29, featuring new, imaginative dance pieces created by acclaimed contemporary choreographers. Expect everything from the aesthetics of jazz dance (performed to Miles Davis) to Afro-Cuban movement to dramatic solo and duet works. Featured artists are Gilliane Hadely, Lisa del Rosario, Melissa Cobblah Gutierrez and Tania Vergara Perez (the latter from Sarasota).

Closing out the season, April 27-30, will be a reprise of SCD’s previously staged “Jehanne,” which studies Joan of Arc’s powerful influence during the Hundred Years War. It will be accompanied by original composition by Mark Dancigers with an “Evolving/Revolving” theme.
