Across the street from Gillespie Park, in the white house with the asymmetrical roof on Gillespie Avenue, two Sarasota artists are creating cool jewelry and wall art at Raine Studio.

Thanks to its zoning, the house is a live-work space where Lorrie Dickinson and Karen Chandler, creator of our Sarasota Heroes mural, combine their creativity.

Chandler makes small art pieces and passes them onto Dickinson, who sets them into silver or gold as funky pendants on strings of pearls or other semi-precious stones. Other times they dangle from earrings, a different splash of color on either side or one different than the other, because “we’re not into the matchy-match look,” Dickinson says.

It all started three years ago, at Vintiquity Lane on Lime Avenue in Sarasota, where Chandler and Dickinson each had an artisan booth. Dickinson was drawn to Chandler’s art, and she introduced herself and commissioned a portrait of her mother-in-law. The rest was art history.

“We clicked. We had instant creative respect [for each other], and it's so exciting to collaborate,” Dickinson says.

Most of Chandler's subjects are “strong and fabulous women,” she says. “I want to paint portraits of people who make you feel like you can conquer the world when you look at them.”

At the studio, you'll find prints of Chandler's original work on canvas and wood. Or, rather, they’ll find you. The hyped-up silhouettes and angular faces in electric colors emit a devil-may-care confidence.

Chandler studied oil painting for five years at the Stevenson Academy of Traditional Painting in Sea Cliff, New York, and has been painting for more than 25 years. She’s lived in Sarasota for five years and her mural work has turned mundane city buildings into Pop Art landmarks.

Dickinson has lived in Sarasota since 1972 and used to work for Coastal Federal Savings and Loans doing mortgage lending. (In fact, she handled many of the residential loans that funded Gillespie Park home purchases in the '80s and '90s.) Largely self-taught, she’s been crafting jewelry for 15 years and uses a lot of fluorite, amethyst, pearls, gold and silver.

Jewelry prices range from $35 for a pair of earrings to $300 for a pendant necklace made with pearls. Chandler’s wall art pieces are priced from $45 to $360, depending on their size.
