How Cryptocurrency Is Reshaping Online Payments, From E-Commerce to Online Casino Platforms
Most people would agree that the way we pay for goods and services online has changed considerably over the past couple of decades. Traditional methods such as credit/debit cards and bank transfers have been joined by more modern alternatives, including online banking and digital wallets.
However, while each of those methods has its place in online payments, the belief of many is that it is cryptocurrencies that are now reshaping digital payments across different online sectors. Whether at e-commerce platforms, online casino sites, or travel services, cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and Ripple, are increasingly being supported for financial transactions.
These platforms are not necessarily replacing traditional payment systems, but giving consumers alternatives that carry a range of benefits such as decentralized transaction processing, more efficient cross-border functionality and wide availability across various industries.
Blockchain Enables Direct Digital Transactions
A reason why a portion of consumers prefer using cryptocurrencies for online payments is the decentralised nature of transactions. Unlike traditional payment options that have to pass payments through various banks and payment processors before they are completed, cryptocurrency payments are peer-to-peer. That means they go from the consumer to the online platform or vice versa, without any intermediaries involved in the transaction.
Crypto transactions are all completed across distributed ledger technology, which is more commonly known as a blockchain network. They’re verified by the network first, and are then recorded permanently on the ledger to create an auditable transaction history that is not reliant on any single central authority.
While transactions are decentralised in nature, it does not mean they’re always completely private. Many businesses that support digital currencies as a payment method still have to use systems to verify users, monitor transactions and comply with financial crime legislation. In certain jurisdictions in the iGaming space, online casino and sportsbook operators often have to comply with know-your-customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering requirements alongside other regulatory obligations as well.
Cross-Border Payments Present One of Crypto's Main Use Cases
Another of the many reasons some online platforms consider supporting cryptocurrencies is the benefits they have for cross-border transactions. Regular international payments typically have to go through multiple financial institutions, undergo currency conversion processes and can sometimes experience settlement delays. Conversely, the peer-to-peer nature of crypto payments allows for quick and direct completion from one crypto wallet to another.
Those benefits have not only attracted many online platforms, but many banks and financial institutions have also explored using cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies for cross-border payments. An example is Project Agorá, a Bank for International Settlements initiative bringing together seven central banks and more than 40 private financial institutions to test tokenised cross-border settlement. Its prototype showed that combining tokenised commercial bank deposits with tokenised central bank reserves on a shared platform could enable faster, cheaper and safer international transactions, although the approach is still in an experimental phase.
Despite the clear advantages of cryptocurrencies for international payments, there are some additional factors platforms must consider. Among these are exchange rate volatility, differing regulatory frameworks and the practical challenges of integrating cryptos into existing financial systems.
Online Gambling Platforms Were Early Adopters
Online gambling was one of the first sectors to fully embrace cryptocurrency payments, which makes sense as some users view decentralised transaction processing and alternative payment options as factors when choosing a platform.
Many platforms began supporting cryptocurrency payments as demand for digital asset transactions using coins like Bitcoin, Litecoin, Solana and Tether increased. Some sites even offer a variety of conventional banking methods alongside digital currencies to give players even more options when depositing and withdrawing.
It should be noted that just because an online casino supports crypto payments, it does not mean they’re free from the regulations traditional casino platforms have to adhere to. No matter whether transactions are completed using fiat currencies like EUR or USD, or digital coins, regulated operators still have to satisfy the conditions of their licensing.
Depending on the gambling authority they operate under, they may have to carry out identity verification, provide responsible gambling tools and have a clear complaints process customers can use. In Ontario, for example, operators registered with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) must provide deposit, loss and time-based limits and self-exclusion tools, while platforms serving other provinces typically operate under the Kahnawake Gaming Commission's licensing framework.
E-Commerce Platforms Have Gradually Expanded Payment Options
Although not adopted as quickly as the online gambling industry, cryptocurrencies have also become a growing influence in the e-commerce sector in recent years. Some online merchants have added support for cryptocurrency payments alongside regular fiat systems. For some, the decision is purely a commercial one, as it allows them to accommodate customers who may already hold crypto assets, while also expanding the payment methods they support in their checkout.
Still, as with crypto casinos, e-commerce websites still have to adhere to various regulations, although these can vary greatly depending on the jurisdiction they’re operating in and the sort of products or services they are selling.
Cryptocurrency is Now a Big Part of the Broader Digital Payments Landscape
The role of cryptocurrencies in the online payments space has never been more important, with digital currencies now having a big influence on how transactions are completed across numerous sectors including online gambling and e-commerce. Their decentralized structure and suitability for certain cross-border use cases have all played a part in their adoption.
As a result, more consumers are becoming familiar with Bitcoin and other digital assets as a payment option for online transactions. While they’re not replacing traditional payment options that are still widely used today, they’ve certainly established themselves as a big part of the wider payments landscape.
