The United States head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup carrying the full weight of national expectations on their shoulders.

As the most prestigious international tournament returns to North America for the first time since 1994, the co-host nation will be eager to deliver a performance worthy of the occasion on home soil.

For fans tracking odds and tournament markets, many platforms are already promoting World Cup specials, including a sign up bonus for new users. From outright winner bets to group-stage predictions and player props, early wagering trends suggest strong interest in the USMNT’s chances. As always, bettors are advised to assess form, fixtures, and value before placing any stakes.

Legendary coach Bruce Arena set the benchmark high for future generations when his side, captained by Claudio Reyna, made the quarter-finals in the 2002 edition.

What was supposed to be a turning point and make the USMNT one of the emerging superpowers in world football proved to be a one-off, as it remains the nation’s best World Cup run since 1930.

Despite reaching the knockout stages in Qatar four years ago, Gregg Berhalter failed to meet expectations, with his side netting just three goals in four matches.

As a result, the United States appointed former Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino as his replacement in September 2024.

Pochettino era

While his beloved Tottenham, where he ‘feels at home,’ fight tooth and nail to avoid Premier League relegation, Pochettino has to prepare the United States for this summer’s tournament.

Pochettino kicked off his tenure with a comfortable 2-0 friendly win over Panama and has since overseen 13 victories across 23 games in charge of the USMNT.

However, the 54-year-old manager has failed to deliver on the grand stage.

Indeed, in addition to a lacklustre CONCACAF Nations League campaign, the US had to settle for a gut-wrenching runner-up finish at the 2025 Gold Cup, falling to a 2-1 defeat to bitter rivals Mexico in the final.

Preparations for the World Cup have been far from smooth, with heavy defeats at the hands of Belgium and Portugal, casting doubt on the USMNT’s ability to compete against top teams.

Between dreams & reality

With the United States progressing from the group stages in each of their last three World Cup appearances, securing a knockout berth is the bare minimum fans expect from Pochettino’s side.

Drawn together with Australia, Paraguay and Turkey in a competitive-looking Group D, the USMNT boast decent chances of locking down one of the two qualifying spots.

Even the leading bookmakers view the seven-time Gold Cup champions as the second-favourites to reach the round of 16 behind the Crescent-Stars, fuelling cautious optimism that Pochettino’s side can meet baseline expectations.

While thinking the US can make a sensation on home soil and lift the coveted ‘Jules Rimet’ trophy feels like wishful thinking, a place in the knockout stages is not beyond the realm of possibility.

No matter what the bookies say, the USMNT cannot take anything for granted, as Australia and Paraguay are both perfectly capable of pulling off an upset and complicating their path to the knockouts.

Out-of-form AC Milan talisman under the spotlight

The tournament in Qatar ended in disappointment for the United States, but it provided many of the current squad members with valuable experience, offering them their first taste of World Cup football.

One of them was Christian Pulisic, who scored one of the USMNT’s three goals at the tournament, netting a precious winner against Iran in the final group-stage fixture.

Pulisic remains the face of this team, with Pochettino and the rest of the country placing immense faith in the AC Milan forward to lead by example and inspire a deep run on home soil.

Although the 27-year-old underlined the United States’ strength during his recent interview with The Independent, he must rediscover his form before the World Cup kicks off.

Despite being the club’s second-best goalscorer in Serie A this season, Pulisic’s last league goal came in December, showing just how dire his form has been in 2026.
