If you missed your chance at that $16.5 million house on Longboat, here’s one that’s almost as nice and less than half the price. It’s the home of Elita Kane, the Latvian-born widow of Daniel Kane, one of the famous Kane brothers who were the nucleus of one of Sarasota’s largest fortunes. Daniel died in 1998; Stanley—at age 100—in August.

The home is located on Bird Key, on a premium piece of land—just over half an acre—with sunset views over the bay. It’s a big place, over 7,200 square feet with five bedrooms and six-and-a-half baths.  The pool is 50 feet long and there is a state-of-the-art dock.

The interior is very light and airy, designed for large scale entertaining. Check out the incredible grand stairway. The master wing has a home office, and outside you’ll find a gazebo and a summer kitchen.

There’s an odd piece of trivia connected with the house. Elita’s son Janis tweeted a picture of that famous plane crash in the Hudson River to his then-170 followers (he was on a ferry boat that stopped to rescue survivors) and the photo caused a sensation. “It changed everything,” says Twitter founder Jack Dorsey. Twitter suddenly became a major force in the world, a mega-shift in the way news was delivered. And it all started with a picture taken by a guy who lived at 614 S. Owl Dr.

614 S. Owl Drive is priced at $6.25 million. For more info call Rinat Sikdar of Coldwell Banker at (941) 993-9292.
