Photographer Clyde Butcher has spent decades producing remarkable black-and-white images of landscape and nature. Now Butcher, who has galleries featuring his work in both Venice and Big Cypress, has compiled some of his favorite images into a new book, Celebrating America’s National Parks, Preserves, Monuments, Recreation Areas.

Timed to coincide with the National Park Service’s centennial this year, the book’s collection of photos covers more than five decades of photography at 33 national parks. Emmy-winning filmmaker Ken Burns, whose PBS series on the national parks likewise paid homage to what historian Wallace Stegner called “the best idea we ever had,” says of Butcher’s photographs, “They not only reveal the intimate and majestic beauty of the environment, they also remind us of the abiding kinship we mortals share when we work together to preserve these magnificent places. Butcher’s art is a national treasure.”
