Sarasota County Schools voted 3-2 on Tuesday to extend the district's face-covering policy through the end of the year. Board members Bridget Ziegler and Eric Robinson voted against the measure citing a lack of metrics as to when the policy will be lifted. Outside the meeting, anti-mask protestors clashed with people in favor of the face covering requirement. Sarasota County's district cases per 10,000 and the rolling 14-day positivity rate have climbed since school resumed in August; however, numbers remain below Florida's mid-summer spike, which saw more than 15,000 cases per day in late July. Sarasota Memorial Hospital infectious disease expert Dr. Manual Gordillo said the county's positivity rate is currently 3.88 percent, compared to 2.81 percent at the start of the school year.
