More than 1.5 million Americans filed for unemployment last week, according to new data from the Department of Labor—the 13th straight week that more than 1 million people have submitted claims. Heidi Shierholz, director of policy at the Economic Policy Institute, a progressive think tank, told the New York Times this week that although weekly filings have come down from a record 6.5 million in April, "it’s still more than twice the worst week of the Great Recession” and "a sustained hemorrhaging of jobs unlike anything we’ve seen before.”

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 6 were in California (27,202), Massachusetts (17,512), Oklahoma (17,149), New York (11,873), and Maryland (9,718), while the largest decreases were in Florida (95,546), Texas (17,001), Georgia (13,909), Michigan (11,454), and Maine (8,034).
