New data from the Department of Labor shows that another 3,169,000 people filed for unemployment, bringing the total number of Americans who are unemployed to more than 33 million in the seven weeks since the COVID-19 pandemic began. According to the New York Times, economists expect that the Department of Labor's monthly jobs report will put the April unemployment rate at around 15 percent or higher—similar to the numbers recorded during the Great Depression. The figure will almost certainly understate the damage, the Times says. In Florida, 173,191 people filed unemployment claims last week, a decrease of 259,912 people from the week before.
