Unemployment Claims Total More Than 22 Million

More than 5.2 million people filed for unemployment this week, bringing the unemployment rate to an unprecedented 8.2 percent.

New data from the U.S. Department of Labor shows that more than 5,245,000 people filed for unemployment this week, bringing total unemployment claims over the last four weeks to more than 22 million. In Florida, initial claims show that 181,293 people filed for unemployment during the week ending April 11, an increase of 11,408 over the previous week's total.

The Labor Department's data also shows that he advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 8.2 percent for the week ending April 4, an increase of 3.1 percent from the previous week. That marks the highest seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate in the history of the seasonally adjusted series. The previous high was 7 percent in May of 1975.
