Mote Marine Laboratory’s coral reef research facility in the Florida Keys recently become the first U.S. Green Building Council LEED Gold Commercial certified building in Monroe County. The certification recognizes eco-friendly design and construction. Mote’s Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration opened in May 2017 to assist marine research supporting conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources. The building features increased energy efficiency, a rooftop solar array, captured rainwater, native landscaping, recycled materials and more.
