Sarasota’s Benjamin Gilkey was nine years old when he died from relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia. During his treatment at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, he was the recipient of 100 blood and platelet transfusions. On May 4, aka Star Wars Day—a day celebrating the force of life—OneBlood will donate $10 for every donor to the Benjamin Gilkey Fund for Innovative Pediatric Cancer Research.
Generally healthy people age 16 or older who weigh at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Photo ID is required and appointments are available, but walk-ins are also welcome. Masks are required and social distancing protocols will be in place. To learn more and to register, click here.
