Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe: Eubie!

WBTT kicks off its 2021-22 season with this revue saluting composer and ragtime pianist extraordinaire Eubie Blake—the “Father of Black Broadway.” Jim Weaver directs a cast largely familiar to WBTT audiences, including Syreeta S. Sarasota Orchestra: Discover Mozart: Rebirth

Another sign that arts groups are truly back in business: this first full orchestra concert of the season, led by maestro Kensho Watanabe. On the program: Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 (played by Dominic Cheli), Valerie Coleman’s Seven O’Clock Shout, and Schumann’s Spring Symphony. Meanwhile, the Players commences the new season with this musical about two struggling writers working furiously to compete in a new musical theater festival, against a tight deadline. The 90-minute show will take place at Art Center Sarasota, not the Players’ new quarters at Studio 1130 in The Crossings at Siesta Key, so make sure to plug that into your GPS. The Hermitage Artist Retreat: Artists and Thinkers

This new virtual series spotlighting intimate conversations with curators and Hermitage alumni features award-winning producer Christopher Burney and Golden Globe Award-winning actor, playwright and activist Regina Taylor, at 5 p.m. Thursday. Old Miakka Hootenanny

If you give a hoot about the rural community of Old Miakka and its historic schoolhouse, show up for this event benefiting the preservation of the 1914 building. Paintings by local artists, local honey, crafts, live music featuring Dagmar Beaver, In Cahoots and The Dunn Deal, broomstick pony rides and much, much more are on tap. Suncoast Black Arts Collaborative: The Black Experience in the Arts in Higher Education

The collaborative’s Arts and Racial Justice Discovery Series this month features college presidents, administration, faculty and students in a town hall-style conversation, starting at 5:30 p.m. at Florida Studio Theatre. Moderator is Dr. Denise Davis-Cotton of the Florida Center for PAinT, University of South Florida. A fund raiser for the collaborative’s programs, so tickets are $100 each, and masks are required.
