Historic Spanish Point: Butterfly House

Opening Oct. 31

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens' Historic Spanish Point in Osprey has a new experience for visitors starting Saturday: the region's only butterfly house, nestled beside the outdoor Native Butterfly Garden. Butterflies play an important role in pollination, and more than 160 species breed in Florida, with about 200 migrating through the state. Look for the cloudless sulfur, giant swallowtail, Gulf fritillary, monarch, orange-barred sulphur and zebra longwing--and, of course, some colorful flowers in the garden, too. selby.org

 Key Chorale: Together We Rise

Oct. 30-Nov. 22

Speaking of resilience…join this new Sarasota nonprofit helping those impacted by trauma and abuse when it hosts a drive-in movie screening of the classic The Wizard of Oz. Monster Movie Mashup

Oct. 30 and 31

Another fun drive-in movie experience, this one showcasing the cult 1967 animated musical comedy Mad Monster Party. But before the film rolls, guest artists of the Manatee Performing Arts Center will sing mashup tributes to sci fi and horror movie stars. The event takes place at 7:30 p.m. each night in the MPAC parking lot; you can stay in your car or bring chairs and blankets to sit in pre-marked areas. Space is limited; call (941) 749-1111 or (941) 748-5875.

Venice Theatre: The Vagina Monologues

Oct. 30-Nov. 1

Slightly less family-friendly here (read: adults only!) for this presentation of Eve Ensler’s hit depicting a wide range of female voices talking about…you know what. Three actresses bring the monologues to life in the MainStage Jervey Theatre; for tickets (online sales only), visit venicetheatre.org or email [email protected]. Sales close 24 hours before each performance.

People of the Book

Nov. 2, 3 and 4

The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee welcomes you to tune in via Zoom to these talks by a variety of authors, including Grammy-nominated singer Alexandra Silber (White Hot Grief Parade, 7 p.m. Nov. 2), Emmy-nominated writer Bess Kalb (Nobody Will Tell You This But Me, 2 p.m. Nov. 3) and lawyer and public speaker Jason B. Rosenthal (My Wife Said You May Want to Marry Me, 7 p.m. Nov. 4). For tickets, head to jfedsrq.org/books.

HD at the Opera House

Puccini’s tragic Madama Butterfly is next in the Sarasota Opera’s series of films, with this version set in a 1930s film studio where work is being done on a movie adaptation of the story of Cio Cio San and Pinkerton. From Teatro Madrid; sung in Italian with English subtitles. At 1:30 p.m.; for tickets call (941) 328-1300 or go to sarasotaopera.org.
