What to Do in Sarasota This Weekend

Dance parties everywhere, new theater productions in Manatee, exhibits at Art Center Sarasota and Ringling College, and more.

Noche Cubano Dance Party

Oct. 15

Afro-Cuban artist Cimafunk returns to the courtyard of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art with this event, which starts at 7 p.m. and also features D.J. Edgar, salsa dance lessons provided by D.K. Studio, Cuban food and rum drinks for purchase. Also: a live drawing of the Extraordinary Experience Prize Package. Sarasota Contemporary Dance: Voices

Speaking of dance, SCD’s 16th season commences this week, offering a showcase for rising choreographers and movement makers, chosen by artistic director Leymis Bolaños Wilmott. Performances are at the Cook Theatre; for tickets, click here.

Music on the Plaza

And yet more dance chances, if you hurry to this event at the Marcy & Michael Klein Plaza at the Sarasota Art Museum, from 6 to 8 p.m. Fabi World Music provides the grooves, Bistro at the museum provides the food and drink (with some Latin flair), you provide the moves. Sarasota Rocktoberfest

Celebrate fall, Florida-style, with this free fest offering food, live music and more, at JD Hamel Park on Bayfront Drive. Expect smoked sausages, sauerkraut (of course!), pretzels and music by the likes of Dr. Dave, Kettle of Fish, Damon Fowler, Gas House Gorilla and more. Manatee Players: Mamma Mia!

The stage of the Manatee Performing Arts Center’s Stone Hall turns into a Greek island paradise for this production of the megahit based on ABBA’s music, as a daughter seeks to find which of three men from her mother’s past is her father. Theatre Odyssey One-Act Play Festival

Also onstage at MPAC, in the Bradenton Kiwanis Theater there, is Theatre Odyssey’s festival, returning to live performance after a year of radio theater due to Covid-19. Ringling College Art Galleries Exhibits

Oct. 18-Dec. 10

A new round of shows at the art college campus galleries, including landscapes by Lee Mayer (Patricia Thompson + Skylight Galleries); illest of ill, a student illustration show in the Willis Smith Gallery; Newtown Alive in the Basch Gallery; and POW! Art Center Sarasota New Exhibitions

Oct. 14-Nov. 27

More visual art to explore, as the art center opens three new shows. Flare features multimedia work in fabric, photography and video by Sibel Kocabasi; Human Skins presents mixed-media works on canvas by Kirk Ke Wang; and Sarasota Architectural Photography is a juried show highlighting Sarasota’s cityscapes and landscapes. Fruitville Grove Farm Pumpkin Festival

If you haven’t yet ventured out to the Fruitville Road farm to get your pumpkin fix, you still have three weekends to do so, and admission is free, with a petting zoo, playground, live music and more included. The Hermitage Artist Retreat: Body Language

Subtitled An Exploration of Movement and Poetry, this Hermitage event welcomes dancer, choreographer and producer Jules Downum for an interactive dance workshop, plus poet Pedro Serrano sharing his work in both English and Spanish.
