Sarasota Orchestra On the Road Outdoor Concerts

Jan. 10

Not just one, but two outdoor concerts this weekend featuring musicians of the orchestra. Both take place at 2:30 p.m. One is at Nathan Benderson Park and presents the Sarasota Wind Quintet; the other is at the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast/Bay Preserve at Osprey, with the Sarasota Second Winds performing chamber music. Seating is limited in both cases, so check and pre-register at sarasotaorchestra.org/concerts/parks-and-partners.

Selby Gardens: Rainforest Masks of Costa Rica

Jan. 9-31

The hand-carved, painted balsa wood masks created by the Borucan Indian tribe of Costa Rica return to the Museum of Botany & the Arts at the gardens, with a ticketed opening reception Jan. 8 and going on view to the general public Jan. 9. They are available for purchase; admission included with gardens admission price. selby.org

The Hermitage Artist Retreat Beachfront Series

Jan. 8

The outdoors continues to be the place to be with this event taking place as the sun sets (from 5 p.m.) on the retreat’s Manasota Key campus. Three artists—composer Peter Van Zandt Lane, who will play the bassoon, fiction writer Amy Parker, who will read from her latest book, and mixed-media teaching artist Jeannette Rodriguez Pineda—are set to appear. Bishop Museum of Science & Nature

Jan. 13

The museum’s think+drink/science series returns for 2021, with experts in the techniques of astrophotography sharing their advice on how to shoot for the sky (so to speak). At 7 p.m.; cost is $5 for those who are not Discovery Society members (for members, it’s $3). Register here.
