Sarasota Orchestra On the Road Outdoor Concerts

Not just one, but two outdoor concerts this weekend featuring musicians of the orchestra. Both take place at 2:30 p.m. One is at Nathan Benderson Park and presents the Sarasota Wind Quintet; the other is at the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast/Bay Preserve at Osprey, with the Sarasota Second Winds performing chamber music. Selby Gardens: Rainforest Masks of Costa Rica

The hand-carved, painted balsa wood masks created by the Borucan Indian tribe of Costa Rica return to the Museum of Botany & the Arts at the gardens, with a ticketed opening reception Jan. 8 and going on view to the general public Jan. 9. The Hermitage Artist Retreat Beachfront Series

The outdoors continues to be the place to be with this event taking place as the sun sets (from 5 p.m.) on the retreat’s Manasota Key campus. Three artists—composer Peter Van Zandt Lane, who will play the bassoon, fiction writer Amy Parker, who will read from her latest book, and mixed-media teaching artist Jeannette Rodriguez Pineda—are set to appear. Bishop Museum of Science & Nature

The museum’s think+drink/science series returns for 2021, with experts in the techniques of astrophotography sharing their advice on how to shoot for the sky (so to speak). At 7 p.m.; cost is $5 for those who are not Discovery Society members (for members, it’s $3). Register here.
