Selby Gardens Art Fair and Sale Weekend

Aug. 21 and 22

If you’re an admirer of the Florida Highwaymen—African-American landscape painters whose work is currently on display at Selby Gardens—this weekend is your chance to acquire a new piece for your collection. The fair and sale takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the downtown Sarasota campus, and among artists featured are Kandie Ingram (daughter of Mary Ann Carroll, whose paintings are in the exhibit), Isaac Knight and Curtis Arnett.  Majesty of Rock Concert

Aug. 21

Pining for the good old days of music from Journey and Styx? Majesty of Rock is in your corner with a live concert resurrecting the two super groups’ songs, at 8 p.m. Saturday at CoolToday Park in North Port. Gates open at 6 p.m.; general admission is $12, but you can learn more about special ticket deals at majestyofrock.band/shows.

Music Compound: Back to School Bash

The local music school hosts its annual bash, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its home at 1751 Cattlemen Road. There will be live performances, a bounce house, crafts, face painting, a food truck and more on tap, and demo classes on guitar, vocals and more will be offered, too. Rise Above Performing Arts: Godspell

The Stephen Schwartz-John-Michael Tebelak musical based on the New Testament’s Gospel of Matthew takes to the stage at Rise Above, 3501 S. Tamiami Trail, in a production featuring its students mixing songs, vaudeville and religion in a style that’s proven popular since the show bowed in 1971. Another good place to beat the summer heat: inside the planetarium at The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature, where you can get your guide to the night skies under a 50-foot dome, plus ask questions of the staff.
