It’s best to first establish what you need, what you want, and what you can afford. An interior design expert can help you sort through all of your options so that you get the biggest and best cabinetry bang for your budget. 

Of course, we encourage you to dream your biggest new-cabinet dreams! Just be sure you factor them within your overall budget. When considering cabinets, you have to take into account all sorts of minutiae, like the wood species that comprises the cabinet material and whether that wood is domestic or imported, the finish selection for your cabinets’ exterior, and whether it can be completed quickly (like stain, which can only be applied to particular materials) or a more complicated, multi-step process (like the sanding and buffing involved in an acrylic sheet or lacquer paint). What’s the cabinet box made of? What kind of extras go inside the cabinets? What kind of hardware and installation will be needed?

By discussing your options, in total, with a cabinetry specialist, you’ll have an accurate budget for your kitchen cabinets well before a shelf is set.

I take architecture and lifestyle into consideration, factors that greatly affect not just the cabinetry itself but the layout, flow and physical presence of the cabinets and their surrounding environment. No one has bottomless pockets; your budget has to work within all of these moving parts.

Once you have your cabinet plan all squared away, you simply have to budget for the rest of your dream kitchen. That just leaves appliances, plumbing, electric, HVAC, gas, flooring, ventilation, light fixtures, countertops, faucets, paint, demo and labor. Easy, right?
