10 Homes Over $10 Million

An insider's look into Sarasota's highest-priced real estate.

Presented by Peter G. Laughlin - Premier Sotheby's International Realty May 9, 2019

Sarasota is the little city that lives large.

With an estimated metro population of 821,500, the North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton metropolitan area ranks No. 72 out of 383 metropolitan areas in the United States. That's just 4 percent of the population living in No. 1 ranked New York-Newark-Jersey City, and 6 percent of No. 2 ranked Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim.

But, when it comes to best places to live, U.S. News & World Report ranks Sarasota No. 3 in best places to retire and No. 18 in best places to live. New York is ranked No. 90. Los Angeles, No. 107. Sarasota was credited for its arts and culture scene, as well as for its beaches, which annually rank among the best in the world.

For ultra-wealthy individuals, the added benefit that Florida has no personal income tax adds to the Sarasota attraction. According to a recent article in The Real Deal, the savings from living in a state like Florida that doesn't have a personal income tax could be enough to buy a luxury home here.

While the greater housing market has experienced a nationwide slowdown, the appetite for luxury homes in Sarasota has surged.

According to Peter Laughlin, luxury real estate agent with Premier Sotheby's International Realty, "In the first three months of 2019, 10 properties over $5 million sold, and three are under contract. That's more than sold in all of 2018. These first-quarter results show a major shift in the Sarasota luxury real estate market, which we have not experienced for many years. We expect this trend to continue, making 2019 an outstanding year for luxury real estate in Sarasota."
