Presented by CAN Community Health February 28, 2019

CAN Community Health has been serving the needs of the HIV community since 1992.  CAN currently serves over 15,000 patients annually with 34 clinics and is dedicated to the treatment, care and continual wellness of people living with HIV, hepatitis C, STDs and other diseases. CAN’s services include medical care, dental care, counseling and therapy, case management, education and peer support, pharmacy services, and community awareness including free rapid HIV and HEP C testing. In addition, CAN is working on new ways to deploy health services to rural areas where HIV prevalence is high. Soon CAN will provide telehealth services to include telepsychiatry and telePrEP, connecting patients through a phone or computer with a health care provider.

CAN Community Health advances its mission through empowerment, education, inclusion and the creation of hope by offering integrated resources and advocating for the end of HIV stigma.

Bringing health services, education and counseling to the people that need it most is the commitment that drives CAN’s continuing expansion. With the rate of HIV incidences on the rise, we must continue to spread the vision of hope and healing!

The mission of CAN Community Health is to provide a continuum of medical, social and education services essential to the health and well-being of those living with HIV, hepatitis C, sexually transmitted diseases, other diseases and to enhance public awareness.

1992: CAN Community Health began in a small building on East Street in Sarasota in 1992, known at the time as the Community AIDS Network. When CAN started there were few, dangerous medicines for AIDS and people were dying by the thousands.

1999: Sarasota came to the aid of CAN in 1999 as the community showed its support, allowing CAN to move to its current headquarters.

2000: CAN begins to partner with other service agencies. Through these partnerships, CAN provides medical services as the partner agency provides additional support services.

2010: CAN develops its CAN on the GO program, using medical mobile units to provide health services to rural areas to those who may have social, environmental and economic factors that may cause barriers to services.

2019: CAN prepares to open its national headquarters in early spring of 2019 at 4400 Fruitville Road, Sarasota Florida 34232.
