The Federal Building

The Florida Division of Historical Resources recently awarded the City of Sarasota with a $296,948 historic preservation grant to fund improvements to the historic Federal Building located at 111 S. Orange Ave., Sarasota. The grant will go toward hardening the building with removable protective hurricane screens for 63 windows. A new variable air volume box will also be installed to provide improved air cooling, balustrades will be restored and the building exterior will be cleaned. Built in 1934 as part of FDR's Works Progress Administration job creation program, the structure originally served as a U.S. Post Office. The City of Sarasota will provide matching funds of $148,474.
