Longboat Key Center for the Arts Season Brings Back Contemporary Studio Glass Weekend

The Longboat Key Center for the Arts’ upcoming exhibition schedule brings a return of the center’s popular Contemporary Studio Glass Weekend, presented in conjunction with Habatat Galleries, at the height of the season in January. The season also includes exhibits themed around Old Florida and drawing, in new and different ways.
The 2016-17 season begins Oct. 7 with Old Florida, a 21st-Century Interpretation. Three artists, all Ringling College alumni, are featured in this show, which center director Jane Buckman says “will capture the vibrancy of Florida today interconnected with the intuitive, nostalgic and romantic notions equated to times passed.”

The artists whose images summon up their individual views of Old Florida are Joseph Arnegger, Tim Jaeger and Tom Stephens. The show closes on Nov. 9, with an Artist’s Talk set for 6:30 p.m.
Next up is Drawing Re-Imagined, opening Nov. 18. Paintings, drawings, sculptures and reliefs by artists Will Corr, an instructor at State College of Florida and IMG Academy, and Jack King, a professor of art at the University of Tampa, will demonstrate that even when the materials used to create lines have become ambiguous, the permanent expressive gesture remains. That show closes with an Artist’s Talk on Jan. 13.

The third annual contemporary Studio Glass Weekend, titled Global Luminaries, takes place Jan. 27-29. Leading artists from around the world will represent their counties at several locations: The Basch Gallery at the Ringling College of Art and Design will feature contemporary Italian studio glass sculptures by Davide Salvadore and his sons; the Durante Gallery at LBKCA will showcase art by prominent glass artists of the Czech Republic; and Habatat Galleries, based in Michigan, will also present glass art stars from Hungary, Germany, France, Australia and other countries at a temporary location at Whitney Beach Plaza along Gulf of Mexico Drive. An American pavilion there will spotlight 20 studio glass luminaries from the United States.
The glass weekend also includes home tours of collectors, an auction, visits to artists’ studios, demonstrations, lectures, receptions and more. Glass art will also remain on view at LBKCA through Feb. 25.
In addition, the arts center presents its annual Community Juried Exhibition, March 4-31, and the Women Contemporary Artists Group Show, April 8 through May 11.
