If you’re searching for a summer experience filled with impressive artistry, daring stunts and clever comedy, look no further. The Ringling has partnered with The Circus Arts Conservatory to bring you the 10th anniversary of their Summer Circus Spectacular. The hour-long show, led by Ringmistress Bailey Yelding-Sloan at the Historic Asolo Theater, will enchant you with its set of five world-class performances in acrobatics, dance, juggling, comedy and more.
The Dancing Gauchos were the first to perform during the Summer Circus Spectacular, and they knew how to start a show with a bang. The duo has performed on stages in Las Vegas, New York City and countless more places around the world, dazzling audiences with their dynamic charisma and element of danger in spinning Boleadoras, a prehistoric weapon, creating powerful speed and sound to captivate the crowd. Sergio and Martha, the two performers, appeared on the sides of the stage with an explosive energy that could not be ignored. As they pounded their drums with speed and intensity, the crowd erupted into applause at the duo's passion.
Adam Kuchler wandered onto the stage next with his signature awkward charm, immediately making a humorous impression on the audience. Adam has appeared on shows like The Late Show with David Letterman and has received a coveted award at the International Circus Festival in Spain. His mix of talent and endearing clumsiness left every toddler, teen and adult in the audience laughing uncontrollably. This act was one of my favorites, and I would love to see Adam perform again.
Rony Gomez moved at speeds I didn’t know were capable for human beings, juggling glow-in-the-dark balls and creating a lively spectacle. Gomez moves with sharp energy, demonstrating his mastery of acrobatics, modern dance and juggling. Just when you think he is juggling the maximum amount he can handle, he adds more and more--five, six and even seven balls. The precision and dramatic vitality behind this performance were mesmerizing.
Sarasota circus legend Dolly Jacobs soared with impressive grace in her aerial act. Jacobs, one of the founders of Circus Sarasota, has been performing in the circus industry since 1975. She contorted and posed with strength as she floated through the air, and beamed with a confident energy towards the audience.
Sergey & Sasha, a father and daughter acrobatic duo that appeared on Season 10 of America's Got Talent, was an act filled with incredible strength and showmanship. The most notable part of this performance had to be when Sasha balanced her head on Sergey’s head, then proceeded to climb up and down a ladder in this very position. Similar to watching a scary movie--I covered my eyes but just had to peek through to see what was going to happen next. This performance made my heart pound, and left me utterly awe-struck as the conclusion of the Summer Circus Spectacular.
If you're interested in attending a performance, hurry: tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for children 12 and under, and the show will run from Tuesday-Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. until this Saturday, July 30. https://www.ringling.org/events/summer-circus-spectacular
