Good food can often transport you to another place or mindset, but Saturday, April 9, it can take you to a whole other time period.

A Taste of Old Miakka gives children and adults alike the chance to experience the 1800s through blacksmithing, crafting, archery, and train and knife collections, among other pioneer activities.

Guests can also learn 19th century methods of raising, growing, hunting, and gathering food and indulge in the old time cuisine.

The menu for the weekend includes venison, alligator and wild hog, along with samplings of brim, turtle, armadillo, opossum, raccoon, squirrel and other unique meats.

Herbivores attending can opt instead for guided walks on medicinal and edible plant walks, or browse the country bake sale hosted by local premier home cooks.

"Crowley Museum has been here in Sarasota for many years," says P.R. Brady, Crowley Museum's events manager. "Our purpose is to teach everyone about food and sustainability. We conduct sessions during the school year about things like farming that are often forgetting in education and teach adults skills like how to make things from scratch. Why not bring it all together into one festival that gives people an opportunity to take a step or two back in time?"

The activities run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m at the Crowley Museum and Nature Center, 16405 Myakka Road. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 18.
