For artist-writer Coco Fusco, winner of the 2016 Greenfield Prize awarded by Sarasota’s Hermitage Artist Retreat and the Greenfield Foundation, Cuba has been fertile ground. Currently based in New York but also teaching at the University of Florida, Fusco has made frequent trips to the island nation to shoot videos on topics such as revolution, the Florida Straits or a dissident poet forced to make a public confession of his wrongs. She says her next video (which the prize gives her two years to create) “focuses on an imperiled film and theater director dealing with state censorship.” It will have its first exhibit at The Ringling in 2018. She’s in town this month both for the Greenfield Prize dinner and to discuss her work, at 1 p.m. April 2 at the museum (free, but reservations required; call 475-2098 ext. 8).
