Community Haven for Adults and Children with Disabilities received a $225,000 grant from the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation to assist with the construction of a new facility for Haven Industries. This grant contributes to an ongoing $1.1 million capital campaign to expand the agency’s largest program, which currently serves more than 165 adults with developmental disabilities from throughout Sarasota-Manatee. Community Haven is actively seeking donations to meet its groundbreaking goal of December 2015.
Through Aug. 7, Keiser University is holding its Pencils to Computers back-to-school supplies drive. All items collected will be donated to the Early Learning Coalition of Sarasota County. State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota Libraries is one of 203 grant recipients chosen from across the United States selected to receive a competitive grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association to highlight “Latino Americans: 500 Years of History.” The $3,000 grant will be used for public programming about Latino history and culture.
Young professionals of Kerkering, Barberio & Co., Certified Public Accountants, and the Leading Edge Alliance participated in the fifth annual Global Volunteer Week, raising more than $1,700 in donations for Save Our Seabirds. Additionally, a group of KB Young Professionals and Sarasota Bay Watch volunteered time to clean up Skiers Island.
The Gulf Coast Community Foundation has provided a $30,000 grant to The Salvation Army–Sarasota to help leverage Sarasota County’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Financially struggling families in Sarasota County may receive assistance in paying their electric bills. United Way 2-1-1 service can prequalify potential clients by calling (941) 308-4357. The Salvation Army–Sarasota has partnered with other agencies including North Port Social Services, Laurel Civic Association, Englewood Helping Hand, the Venice Salvation Army and Jewish Family and Children’s Service for closer access to help regardless of where clients may live within Sarasota County.
Local jeweler and businessman Tom Seguin will rappel 160 feet from the top of Bel Mare condominiums, the tallest building in Manatee County located at 120 Riviera Dunes Way in Palmetto, at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 18 to benefit the United Way of Manatee County.
