I have an elevated PSA. What should I do?
PSA is a blood test that has been used for over 20 years. When PSA is elevated, a man has an increased risk of having prostate cancer, and further testing is necessary to determine the cause of this elevation. Specialized blood and urine tests as well as a prostate MRI study can determine a man’s risk of having prostate cancer and whether a prostate biopsy is necessary.

Why is an MRI an important tool in diagnosing prostate cancer?
Prostate MRI is the most significant advance in prostate cancer diagnosis since the PSA test and can suggest whether the prostate is only enlarged (BPH) and at low risk for cancer, or whether there is a tumor present in the prostate. Most standard prostate biopsies are blind, random and inaccurate. MRI images can be used to precisely target suspected tumors for biopsy. For men already diagnosed with prostate cancer, MRI study provides information on the size, location, and severity of the cancer and is essential to creating a personalized treatment plan.
If a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer, what should he do?
Learn as much about your cancer as possible with an MRI study and genomic testing. Research all options and get a second opinion. There is no substitute for an accurate diagnosis.
What is the best way to treat prostate cancer?
There is no single best treatment. Accurate diagnosis and characterization of your prostate cancer can result in a personalized treatment plan that provides the highest chance of cure with least effect on your quality of life. I do not advocate a cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all approach.
