The American Legion War Memorial was originally built by the Sarasota Bay Post of the American Legion, and it was located in the center of Five Points. In 1917, a flag pole was placed in the memorial to honor those from Sarasota who had gone to World War I. As tribute to the armistice that ended this war, a dedication ceremony was created for the symbolic flag pole in 1928. The photo above, circa 1940, shows one of these dedication ceremonies taking place before the monument was moved to the Bay Front Park due to its declaration as a traffic hazard by the State Road Department.
