To artist John Pirman, the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, with its purple color and angular shapes, is “one of the strangest but most interesting buildings in Sarasota.” Here, though, he views it as a backdrop to the sculpture Applause, by David E. Davis, which greets theatergoers as they arrive. “Its geometric composition represents clapping,” says Pirman, “and the circle, square and triangle represent drama, music and dance—a trio of entertainment that Sarasota excels at offering.”
