The Pittsburgh Pirates and Bradenton Marauders have announced a $1.2 million donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County, which serves more than 6,000 children at seven locations countywide. The gift will be distributed over 12 years. The Boys & Girls Clubs facility adjacent to the Pirates’ McKechnie Field was closed in September 2013 as the organization rearranged its services. That facility will make way for the expansion of McKechnie Field and the continued development of the area as an arts and entertainment district.

The physicians and staff of the Emergency Room at Doctors Hospital of Sarasota have collected supplies for an orphanage in La Colorado, Honduras. Their donations will provide clothing and other needed items, including formula, antibacterial ointment and over-the-counter medications, for approximately 35 children. Nurse practitioner Pam Kelly and her daughter will be traveling to the small village to deliver the supplies in February.

IBERIABANK has donated $2,500 for We Care Manatee’s “Sponsor a Patient” program. The donation will provide funding for seven patients to receive one-on-one case management from a specialty physician. Patients in the program receive free medical care for their one year of eligibility.

A group of Bank of America employees are volunteering tomorrow, Jan. 18, to help build a house for Habitat for Humanity Sarasota. The bank is also a major sponsor of the house, which is being built for a local veteran who served in Afghanistan and Iraq. Located at 2829 Rainbow Circle, this will be Habitat’s 200th home built in Sarasota. Construction began in November and will continue through the next few months.
