The Junior League of Sarasota, Inc. has built a sustainable garden for Girls Inc. of Sarasota County, part of the new “Menu for Nutrition” community initiative. Junior League members, who have agreed to donate $2,000 in supplies and 100 volunteer hours for the project, will work with the girls and their families throughout the next year to offer nutrition education and help them care for the new garden.
Don’t forget that through Nov. 15, the Patterson Foundation is matching donations for 12 community organizations supporting veterans in Southwest Florida, part of the Legacy of Valor campaign. The foundation will match all donations between $25 and $1,000, up to a total of $168,500, that are made through GivetoLegacyofValor.org.
Gateway Bank of Southwest Florida raised $2,237 for the American Heart Association by participating in the recent Heart Walk fund-raising event. The bank’s team consisted of 12 walkers. Since 2010, Gateway Bank has been recognized by the AHA as a “fit-friendly” company that champions health in the workplace and the community.
The Baltimore Orioles and the Mayors’ Feed the Hungry Program are teaming up again this year to collect and distribute food for people in need in the Sarasota area. Beginning today, the Orioles will collect non-perishable food items at Ed Smith Stadium and will host the charity’s Thanksgiving Sorting Day at the stadium on Nov. 22. The collection station at the stadium is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekdays. The Mayors’ Feed the Hungry Program has helped more than 390,000 people in Sarasota and Manatee counties since 1987. The program is endorsed by the mayors of Sarasota, Bradenton, Palmetto, Venice and Longboat Key, as well as the chairs of the North Port City Council and the Sarasota and Manatee County Commissions.
For the 12th year in a row, Merrill Lynch in downtown Sarasota transformed into a haunted house for Halloween and invited Girls Inc. of Sarasota County to trick or treat in the office. This was the third year that UBS also participated. This year’s theme was “Castles and Dungeons.”
