➜ After four years with the Sarasota Convention & Visitors Bureau (SCVB), Jason Puckett is spearheading the bureau’s new Sarasota County Sports Commission as director of sports. Sporting events have grown from six to 55 events per year since Puckett started, and that growth in competitions—rowing, BMX racing, Frisbee tournaments, swimming meets and beach volleyball, to name a few—has created a larger budget for attracting even more competitions. Along with an advisory board, Puckett will research which events to sponsor and how much to spend on them. “My job is to attract sporting events to Sarasota County that will have an economic impact in every way, from restaurants to shops to hotel room stays,” he says.

➜ DabWear co-owners Jamie Wilson and Jacob Stinton opened a second location for their clothing, accessory and sundry store at 417 12th St. W. (Old Main Street) in the Jennings Arcade in downtown Bradenton this summer. Their original Palmetto store is celebrating its first anniversary. Wilson, who had spent almost 15 years in the restaurant industry and had also studied to be a perfumer, wanted to fulfill his dream of opening a retail store. They started with natural perfumes and colognes and then added products such as special soaps and hand-poured soy candles, accessories and trendy clothing for all ages and both sexes. The partners are ambitious. “We want five stores in five years,” says Wilson. “We actually chose Bradenton as our second location because Old Main Street had reasonable rent prices. We were able to negotiate our lease down from $17 per square foot in an up-and-coming area.”
