On the Road Again: Family Musical Roadtrip

Florida Studio Theatre is offering this free, family-friendly musical at more than 20 locations this summer, with an ensemble performing songs from “Country Roads” to “Deep in the Heart of Texas.” Coming up this weekend, the show is at Philippi Estate Park, at 7 p.m. Sunday. Venice Summer Cabaret Festival

July 15-Aug. 8

Speaking of shows, Venice Theatre is back with its lineup of small-scale summer shows in its Pinkerton Theatre, albeit they are staged during a shorter than usual timespan. Kicking things off July 15 and 16 will be The Sinatra Songbook, featuring John Lariviere delivering hits from Ol’ Blue Eyes. He’s followed by Dorian & The Furniture’s Tabled, July 17 and 18, a piece “built from the remains of 2019 and 2020’s unplayed set lists,” usually in the folk-rock genre. 2021 Hermitage STARS Showcase

July 17

Five Florida public school arts teachers showcase and discuss the work developed during their residency at the Hermitage Artist Retreat in another free, family-friendly event ($5 for adults), set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Great Lawn at the retreat. Arts Advocates Gallery

Opening July 17

For years the Arts Advocates organization has displayed works from its collection at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. You can continue to see selections there, but now you can also stop by a new gallery space at Suite 119, The Crossings at Siesta Mall. First up: a show featuring 17 works by the Sarasota Colony of Artists, open from 2 to 5 p.m. each Saturday starting this weekend. On Screen at The Ringling

It’s all Asia this month for the movie lineup in The Ringling’s Historic Asolo Theater. This week you can see A Taxi Driver (no, not the Robert DeNiro film), about a journalist hiring a taxi driver to take him to a troubled city in South Korea (1 p.m. July 15); Gook, about two Korean-American brothers in Los Angeles and their unlikely friendship with a young African-American girl (1 p.m. July 16); and the fantasy film Raya and the Last Dragon, (6:30 p.m. July 16).
