Florida Studio Theatre: Sophie Tucker: The Last of the Red Hot Mamas

Opening Night June 4

Now that theaters are reopening, FST is forging ahead with a full summer of productions, including this one starring Kathy Halenda as legendary singer Tucker—one of the most popular shows in the theater’s history, onstage in both 2000 and 2012. Halenda co-created the piece with Jack Fournier, and it’s full of numbers like “The Lady Is a Tramp,” “Some of These Days” and more. NBP Rec Day

 June 5

Nathan Benderson Park’s next “rec day,” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, offers a chance for kids and their parents to get out on the water using kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, a pedal pontoon boat and even a 15-foot sailboat, for a small fee. Learn more at nathanbendersonpark.org/recdays.

Kids Summer Beach Runs

Starting June 8

Speaking of kids...these popular, free fun runs are back for the summer, starting June 8 at Siesta Beach and June 9 at Brohard Park in Venice. On-site registration is at 5:30 p.m., and the one-mile races kick off at 6:30 p.m. Each finisher receives a ribbon; run four races during the next few weeks and get a T-shirt, too. Project Pride SRQ

Throughout June

The newish Sarasota LGBTQ group Project Pride SRQ is hosting a number of events celebrating Pride Month during June, including a downtown car parade June 5, a Pride Pet Parade June 13, and a One Love Art Show at Sabal Palm Bank June 19. There’s lots more going on under its banner, too; check it all out at projectpridesrq.org.

Jazz Brunch

June 6

Music Compound: Rock Your Summer Reading

June 5

As part of its summertime initiative to get kids to read more books, Music Compound presents Sarasota author Amy Diamond hosting live reading sessions at its downtown location (also at the Bazaar on Apricot & Lime). Diamond will read The Adventures of Splash & Shelley: The Lost Octopus and A New Friend, at 10:15 a.m. and again at 11:15 a.m. Free and open to the public, but advance registration required at musiccompound.com.

Summer Movies at Sarasota Opera House

June 5 and 6

The summer season of films screened at the opera house gets underway Saturday with La Cage aux Folles, at 7:30 p.m. (tickets $10) and the HD at the Opera House series presentation of the opera film of Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier at 1:30 p.m. Sunday (tickets $20, $18 for subscribers). All seating is at 50 percent capacity, so get your tickets early at sarasotaopera.org or by calling (941) 328-1300.
