Hail and Farewell

By Kay Kipling October 18, 2010

Well, there always seems to be news happening, some good, some bad for the restaurant business. Sad to say that Aqua Restaurant on Blackburn Point Road has closed its doors. The chef did a wonderful job and the fish was cooked perfectly. We shall miss them and I will keep my ears open as to where Chef Matt ends up next.

 Good-bye, Aqua.

Stone crab fans will be pleased to hear that the stone crab fest is being revived (after the Colony closing) by the Longboat Key Club. On Nov. 12 and 13, the LBKC will host a Wine & Stone Crab Celebration featuring vintner dinners and the ever favorite Grand Tasting. Call (941) 387-9151 for more details and reservations and save a few claws for me.

Libby’s is coming out with their fall menu, and as usual it looks spectacular. Look for a pig in a blanket (of course with Chef Fran’s special twist) and Tempura Arctic Char with tangerine tartar, just to name a few.

Taste of Asia is downsizing on Main Street. If you want their delicious duck with sizzling vegetables, you will have to run over to Siesta Key to their new location in the village. Not to worry, those award-winning pan-fried Lum-lings will be on both menus.

 A Lum-ling eating contest.

If you slept more than seven or eight hours on any given night you missed the opening and immediate closing of Burger Works on Osprey next to Knick’s Tavern. A new Italian restaurant has opened and the word on the street is thumbs up; I will be dining there soon and let you know.

Speaking of burgers, Longevity was not long for the restaurant crowd, and the oxymoron of healthy eating has been released out of the building with a sign that reads “Burger and bar coming.” Let’s see if they can hold up to Knick’s brunch burger, Fleming’s $6 prime burger at the bar and Bonefish Grill’s Kobe beef burger. I am looking forward to the burger challenge.

Who's going to bring the next good burger?

Stay tuned, Sarasota has a few more flavorful twists and turns coming.
