Sarasota Weddings: Brides Against Breast Cancer Opens New Boutique

When you walk into Brides Against Breast Cancer’s new 3,500-square-foot boutique in Lakewood Ranch, you see many of the things you might at other bridal shops: racks of fluffy white gowns, a smiling staff, a cutely decorated space. A white Badgley Mischka stunner greets you when you walk in the door; candy-colored Vera Wang bridesmaids hang on racks in the showroom. And at a grand opening event/ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday night, pink-frosted Lollicakes were on display and pink champagne was flowing.

But the thing that’s different about the Brides Against Breast Cancer boutique is that each of the dresses—3,100 total, in all shapes and sizes, many of them couture—has been donated, either by former brides or bridal manufacturers, which means that shoppers save 25 percent to 75 percent on each dress (most are priced from $100-$800). And most important is that all proceeds from each dress contribute to programs for cancer patients and their families.

“We see this as a great opportunity to connect with a demographic that’s not normally reached, especially since Sarasota is such a premiere bridal destination,” says Amy Paulishak, vice president of business development. “And Brides Against Breast Cancer gives people in the local community the chance to clean out their closets, be green and donate to a great philanthropic cause.”

Brides Against Breast Cancer is a national nonprofit, with its headquarters offices also located in the Lakewood Ranch space. Its parent organization is the Center for Building Hope, and start-up finds were provided by the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice.

In addition the bridal boutique, Brides Against Breast Cancer also puts on a Nationwide Tour of Gowns events in cities across the country, ranging from Portland, Oregon, to Washington, D.C. The next Sarasota event will be August 31-Sept. 1.

Brides Against Breast Cancer is currently accepting donations and volunteers. For more information, visit bridesabc.org or call (877) 721-HOPE.

Sarasota Weddings: Downtown Wedding Showcase

If you happened to walk down Pineapple Avenue last Thursday night between 6 and 8 p.m., you would have seen a gaggle of women congregating near L. Boutique and L. Spa, champagne flutes in hand, enjoying the first-ever Downtown Wedding Showcase. The brainchild of Nicole Kaney of NK Productions, the event was designed to highlight some of downtown Sarasota’s best wedding-industry businesses and offer brides-to-be the chance to meet the experts, get wedding tips and see the top bridal trends right now.

What we loved: The beachy, aquamarine-themed table décor (perfect for Sarasota) by Linens by the Sea; mini-cupcakes, cookies and other pastries from The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota’s dessert display (the chocolate-orange was a favorite); letterpress stationery in a variety of colors from Write-On Sarasota; bouquets for bridal parties and receptions from The Naked Florist; light bites—perfect for passed appetizers at a reception—from Michael’s On East; lookbooks from Blonde Cow Photography showcasing the photographers’ signature style; and swoon-worthy jewelry from June Simmons Designs that paired perfectly with the fabulous gowns La Mariee’s had on display. To top it all off, L.Spa was offering free mini-manicures and massages, plus skincare tips to help brides look their best on their big days. You know it’s a fun event when guests are still hanging out past the official end time, which was certainly the case Thursday night.

And speaking of weddings, stay tuned: You’ll see more Sarasota wedding coverage on our site very soon. In the meantime, if you have questions you’d like answered by local wedding experts, send them to meganm@sarasotamagazine.com and look for the answers in upcoming blog posts.

We love the vibrantly contrasting colors in this photo of a bumblebee buzzing above a bloom, taken by Jessica Eberl on the grounds of the Sarasota Garden Club.
