Mr. Chatterbox's Social Diary

Sarasota Saks appeal, British comedy and beautiful people at the Ungala.

Well, I’m going back to my roots. You are now reading the first edition of my new column. I’m switching from humor to society. Yes, just like in the old days I’m going to be your imaginary friend who goes to all the parties. So come along. We’ll gossip, tell a few jokes, comment on who wore what, and all the time we’ll do it in the nicest way possible. We’re going to be kind and generous and supportive and tasteful. It’s going to be hard but we can do it . . .

Let’s start with those bras. You know, the fundraiser over at Key for the Cure. I will say one thing for brassieres. They always work. People are fascinated by them. Both men and women. What the clever committee did was get a bunch of fantasy bras designed and/or worn by prominent women around town. They were modeled down a runway in the shoe department at Saks and then auctioned off for breast cancer programs at Sarasota Memorial Health Care Systems. One went for $25,000. To an anonymous bidder yet. It was the bra of The Observer newspaper and consisted of social photos decoupaged over the cups. What is going on?  This bra is the talk of the town.

Charlie Ann Syprett

Key to the Cure is the pet project of Saks general manager Sally Schule, and she always makes it work. Pay close attention to her co-chairs. She always picks the girls of the moment, and this year the honors went to Susan Jones and Kyla Weiner.

The event raised a record $92,000 and drew over 500 people. It is traditionally one the chicest events in town and everyone dresses beautifully – after all, it is at Saks.

My date for the Key was Dawn Sharpe, and what a time we were having. But we unfortunately had to leave those wonderful bras early as we were due at the Golden Apple to see Cliff Roles in Caught in the Net. Missing the curtain would be bad enough, but missing the buffet would be unthinkable.

As we settled at our table I realized we were at the Thursday press preview. This is always the best night to attend the Golden Apple. All the theater people show up. It’s almost like a little club. Sitting within spitting distance of us were Jay Handelman, Barney Fitzgerald, Martie Berkowitz, Steve Smith (the famous clown), Eva Slane , Bill and Anne Guisewite, Carolyn Michel and Howard Millman, Wayne Barcomb, plus the entire Turoff family. And as the lights went down we all had only one thought in our minds.

Would Cliff be any good?

Well, he enters, and you immediately realize he’s going to be great. He is in total control of the material – a British sex farce – and he has developed this comic timing that, well, rivals mine. And when he comes out in his underwear, there is a frisson of sexual electricity that jolts out over the audience. I actually heard Donna Des Isles moan.

 Cliff Roles

Cliff will be there until Nov. 27, alternating with another sex farce, Run for Your Wife, in which he also stars. I’m seeing that one this week.

But all these festivities, delightful as they were, were just a prelude to the week’s major event, and unofficial opening of the fall social season, the UnGala Gala at the Ringling Museum. This is where “young Sarasota” gets all dressed up and feasts and dances and is entertained in the museum courtyard, the most spectacular party setting in Sarasota.

Back when I was “young Sarasota” I actually went to the very first UnGala, and remember clearly the puzzled looks of the oddly dressed people as they wandered around and tried to figure what kind of party this was. The idea was, you rebelled against the rules of the gala-going and came in whatever you wanted. You could go to a gala and not get dressed up.

Well, those days are gone. Now people come dressed to the hilt. It’s mostly drop-dead chic, but eccentricities are also encouraged. There were a lot of fedoras and white scarves, and Deborah Blue (in vintage couture) dressed her husband in a gold dressing gown and embroidered slippers, very Ricky Ricardo. And totally apropos, since the theme was Una Noche en La Habana. In fact, many of the men were puffing on Cubans.

I had a chat with Tom Luzier by the paella station. Dressed in a black silk guayabera, he told me how he and wife Allison have two homes, a cute bungalow here and another house in Tampa, where Allison is banker. They spend weekends together and have several “dates” during the week. It sounds like the perfect relationship. And guess what? Rochelle Currey Nigri got her hair marcelled!

My favorite thing about the UnGala is the way it provides a showcase for beautiful women. Here were some of the crowd’s favorites:

David Shoemaker, Yara Michaels, Vern Buchanan

Rod Khleif, Devyn Simone

Chris Pfahler

Check in with me for our next edition of our Charity Register Newsletter. We’ll be attending Wine, Women and Shoes, the opening night of Contact at the Asolo Rep, and Dr. Idol, that battle of the bands featuring musicians from the Sarasota medical establishment. Bob, you must check out the Fug girls at gofugyourself.com. Now that you're back on the social circuit, take a cue from the team that beats them all at skewering the fashionistas...and they're funny, to boot!
