We're thankful for our loyal readers! Happy Thanksgiving, and see you again Dec. 4. Get ready for the glitziest weekend of the season, the All-Star Children's Foundation Celebrity Gala & Golf Classic at the Longboat Key Club & Resort, all to benefit the nonprofit's programs to prevent child abuse. The Friday night gala features world-renowned performance artist Michael Israel (you gotta see him to believe it) and auction items like a week on The World ultra-luxury ship and an autographed AC/DC drum skin. The winners of Saturday's golf tourney each get a $1,500 custom-made suit. |

This is intriguing: Key Chorale, the Sarasota Opera and Sarasota Film Society are teaming Sunday afternoon to present Voices of Light. The 100-member chorale, accompanied by the Sarasota Youth Opera Chorus and orchestra, will perform Richard Einhorn's stirring oratorio to accompany an airing of the silent film masterpiece, The Passion of Joan of Arc. |

- Compañía Flamenco José Porcel comes to the Van Wezel Monday evening. Expect an exhilarating blend of traditional and modern flamenco from this former National Ballet of Spain star and his company of dancers, singers and musicians.
- Celebrated Chinese poet Hu Xudong is in residence at the Hermitage Artist Retreat this month, and you can meet him and hear him read his evocative poetry (in English as well as in Chinese) Monday evening at a free event at Selby Public Library.
- On a less esoteric (but equally important) note, Canvas Café hosts a pre-Thanksgiving “Feed Your Needy Neighbors” party for All Faiths Food Bank Monday evening. For $20, you'll get to sample great wine and hors d'oeuvres, and the restaurant will make a generous donation to the food bank.

§Trivia Answer: D. All of the above. In 1953, 35-year-old Paul Rudolph was hired by entrepreneur Philip Hiss to design a 2,000-square-foot model home for a new development on Lido Key in Sarasota, Florida. It became an icon of mid-century modernism and the most recognized example of the Sarasota School of Architecture. (Source: www.umbrellahouse.com)
