Sarasota Magazine & Biz941 Win 7 Awards

Sarasota Magazine and its sister publication, Biz941, took seven awards at the Florida Magazine Association annual conference Aug. 14, and President and Group Publisher Dan Denton was honored with induction into the Florida Magazine Association Hall of Fame.

Denton founded what is now Gulfshore Media in 1979, sold the company to national publisher CurtCo Media in 2004, and repurchased it—along with its 22 publications across Florida—this spring.

Sarasota Magazine won writing excellence awards for: Charlie Award (first place) for Best Feature, “Over our Heads,” an article about climate change and its impact on rising seas by Craig Pittman, published in March 2010; Charlie Award (first place) for Best Humor, “What I Learned From Ann Coulter,” by Mr. Chatterbox, a.k.a. Robert Plunket, published in April 2010; Silver Award for Best Editorial, “Leveraging our Cultural Capital,” by editorial director Pam Daniel, published in November 2009; and Bronze Award for Best In-Depth Reporting, “Scam,” an article about the Art Nadel Ponzi scheme by Leslie Glass, published in July 2009.

Sarasota Magazine also won a Silver Award for Best Visitor Publication, its On the Beach issue, published in December 2009; and a Silver Award for Best Special Theme Issue, Sarasota Magazine’s Platinum, published in August 2009.

In addition, Biz941 won a Charlie Award (first place) for Johannes Werner’s Outside In column. This is the fourth consecutive year Werner has received this award, which centers on international business issues that affect our region.

“The awards are much-appreciated reminders that creative excellence and reader service are at the heart of our magazines’ mission,” Denton said.
