SARASOTA MAGAZINE STARTS A DRAGON BOAT TEAM

(March 6, 2007)—On March 16, 2007, breast cancer survivors are invited to a free informational session and cocktail party.  The goal of the event is to generate interest for membership to a non-profit cancer support group.

Dragon boat racing, popular in China for 2,000 years, has become an international phenomenon—especially among breast cancer survivors.  With over 50 million participants world-wide, it’s one of the fastest-growing water sports.  Now, on the heels of the Susan G. Komen Build for the Cure project, SARASOTA Magazine is helping to start a team in Sarasota.

On Friday, March 16, all breast cancer survivors and their supporters are invited for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and an exclusive screening of The Hope Chest, an inspiring documentary about Buffalo, N.Y.’s dragon boat team.  The screening will give attendees a look into a day in the life of a dragon boat team member, from the hard work to the camaraderie to the rewards.  Laurie Dooley, Buffalo’s coach, is volunteering to develop the team and will take names of those interested in future meetings

SARASOTA Magazine’s publisher Jeff Lawenda says, “Breast cancer is such an important cause, and we wanted a way to show our support all year long—even after the Build for the Cure house is sold.  And this team seemed like the perfect fit.”
