Newt Gingrich in Sarasota

Mr. Chatterbox chats with Newt Gingrich's wife, Callista, during Gingrich's Sarasota political rally.

by Bob Plunket

Here I am chatting with Callista Gingrich.

At the Newt Gingrich rally at Dolphin Aviation this afternoon, Callista G. got off the campaign bus and made a beeline for me. She clearly had something on her mind.

“They took us to a wonderful restaurant and then they didn’t let us eat,” she complained.

“What restaurant?” I asked, sensing an unusual journalistic opportunity.

Michael’s,” she said.

“Oh, that is good,” I said. “You want me to get you some potato chips from the snack bar?”

“No, that’s OK,” she sighed. “They keep us on that bus, they don’t tell us where we are. It’s good to get out in the sunshine.”

Callista was beautifully dressed in black slacks and a sort of tweedy jacket, with a plain gold necklace and an enormous diamond ring that sparkled in the Florida sun--the famous jewelry from Tiffany?

Newt Gingrich greets supporters.

Here’s a trick I’ve learned about political rallies. Don’t hang out inside with the crowd and the boring warm-up speeches. Instead head around to the back of the building where the bus pulls up. There’s hardly anybody there, and the candidates' spouses—and sometimes the candidates themselves—are often looking for someone to talk to.

“What do you do during the debates?” I asked. (The big Tampa debate had happened the night before.)

“I watch from the audience,” she said. “Then, during the breaks, I go up and encourage Newt.”

“Do you tell him what he’s doing wrong?”

“Of course. I’m his wife.”

What an exciting week, politics-wise. Rick Santorum will be here Sunday, and Michelle Obama is coming Thursday. Check back here for more tidbits and fashion reports.

Hi bob -- I agree w/ Raphael's comments...u should not be choosing political sides as a journalist, nor should you say blasphemous things about your co-workers. You should be ashamed of yourself! What an abuse of your position!

Bob, I was just playing with the whole Elijah Wood thing and taking your job for granted...sorry if it didn't come thru that way...i guess typing leaves much to be desired, yes?...but as far as mr. wood, i mean, you did look depressed and all, but so did some other people. I guess after a long day of work, listening to a hobbit talk for two hours can exhaust the mind! Buuuuuuuttttt, you still are not being an objective and nuetral journalist - you are obviously so far up Newt's hole that you can no longer see the sun shine over Sarasota. If he does not become our next president, I am going to remind you of your proclamation that he would. As far as calling his wife beautiful, that's kinda creepy. What would your own wife think? I mean, she's alright in a past-her-prime cougar sort-of-way, but still...be objective...it's journalism school 101, Bob. I'm glad to see that you like to kick back and drink a few, but in the future, don't mix booze with prescription medication...look at how it turned out for Heath Ledger. Hmmm...I didn't know that Sarasota Mag skewed predominately towards the liberal side...at least u guys aren't like the Observer...geez louise, don't get me started with them! lol...i hope the rest of the mag's staff doesn't read what you wrote about them...and ya, i had sent my CV to pam way back when, but i guess y'all chose to hire Beau becasue of the Denton connection, even tho i would've been a much better fit....well, if nothing else, at least you're not satisfied with the job Barry Obama has done. =)

Well, excuuuuuse me! Usually I let petty nitpicking criticisms roll off my back like a duck out of water, but after reading these outrageous canards, I feel I must "set the record straight."

My interview with Mrs. Gingrich is so full of genuine "news" that it almost defies belief. First of all, the insights into life on a campaign bus--hunger, lack of sunlight--are vividly compelling, and what she does during debates--particularly keeping her husband "in line"--offer probing insights into the state of the marriage of our next president and his beautiful wife.

As for Elijah Wood, I'm sorry if I looked "absolutely depressed." I was suffering from a toothache and had downed several beers in an effort to get the Percocet to dissolve more quickly.

And believe me, I do not take my job for granted. I worry about losing it every single day of my life. If you think you can do it "a whole lot better," then send your resume along and see how you like working with a bunch of crybabies, fashion victims, tree-huggers and the rest of the staff here at Sarasota Magazine.

Bob Plunket should be ashamed of himself! Journalists are supposed to be objective and neutral in their reporting - it's one thing to attend a local newsworthy event, but taking a pic of yourself that basically tells what side (the right) you are on is wrong. Yes, the SRQ is predominately Republican in nature, but not exclusively. There are Democrats and Independents and everything in between here, and they all deserve to be thought about. Plus, a reporter is not there to hang out with the dignitaries and get pics with them and their autograph, but rather to do their job, which is to report the news. I also saw Bob later on that day walking out of the Ringling College auditorium after Elijah Wood's Q&A session, and he looked absolutely depressed! He walked out with this look on his face like he just endured some miserable experience. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that would've loved to have been able to go and see and hear Mr. Wood. Bob needs to appreciate his job and not take it for granted. There are plenty of us that could do his job a whole lot better (IMHO Bob is not a very good journalist), so he better straighten his act up and pronto!
