Chef Judi Gallagher's Foodie's Notebook

Great dining finds from Chef Judi Gallagher.

That's Amore

Il Panificio’s cool, hip cousin opens as Piatti Bistro and Martini Lounge.

by Judi Gallagher

Where once stood a local gas station on the corner of Gulf Gate Drive and Gateway now stands Il Panificio, Sarasota’s award-winning Italian bakery, pizza and deli stop. When I am on Main Street I stop in for a slice (or two) at the original Il Panificio and a visit with Pops. When I am in Gulf Gate, I visit with Uncle Lenny, who is often sitting out on the patio, sharing old stories, a glass of wine and a pizza or grinder.

Now comes a whole new experience: Piatti. And I had the joy of sitting down with both Pops and Uncle Lenny, as well as owners Nick and Tracy Melone, at their new Gulf Gate bistro.

Piatti is Gulf Gate's new hot spot.

Nick explains it best: “If you want a slice or a pizza with the family in a casual busting setting, you go to Il Panificio. If you want the same great food but a more uptown menu, plus full service and martini--all without the up-charge--you can now enjoy Piatti.”

What I liked is that the new bistro has a Mediterranean influence with some great American comfort dishes, like a Kobe beef burger and veal skirt steak with smashed potatoes as the nightly specials. Instead of a slice at Piatti, you get a 12 inch pizza--same pizza, same delicious ingredients that we know and love, just in a “cool vibe” space. The chophouse pizza, with imported Italian sausage, pepperoni, capiocola, onions, peppers and mozz, is a house favorite--ours, too (and I don’t even like pepperoni).

The wine room is chic, with glass walls and blue under-lights on the bar and wall, making it feel a little clubby later as the pretty people gather for cocktails and a few nibbles.

This new Englander loved the simple flavors of the fresh cod.

As a New Englander, I can say Chef Steven Whipple gets a thumb up for his cod oreganato with fresh chunks of tomatoes, garlic and toasted bread crumbs. We loved Piatti’s version of a “bang-bang shrimp,” as well as the Tuscan Wedge and White Bean Piatta salad. Too bad we already had our French fry contest for Sarasota magazine, because these truffle fries could have taken top prize.

Piatti's wedge salad.

Service is a little slow, but they are working on that. Lunch is served daily with half-sandwich and salad options as well as full menu. There are plenty of happy hour specials and Piatti can be rented out for private parties. In fact, the first night we planned on dining there, they were booked for a private dinner party, band and all.

So, now you have even more choices from the family at Il Panificio: Piatti, the new hip spot.

Other favorites in Gulf Gate include Vizen for sushi, Small Batch Bakery for cranberry muffins and Piccolo’s for meatball subs.

The food is way over priced, and after hours the scene is typical Sarasota Phoney. Diners can do much better at a more seasoned location.
The chef seems more concerned with mingeling with the not so hip crowd than staying in the kitchen.
This aint New York people this is Gulf Gate.
That bleach blonde hostess needs to learn some serving skills before being turned out to greet customers.
I would never go back after learning from a newspaper article that the owners of this place plead guilty to tax fraud according to a local newspaper article from the Herald Tribune.Besides the food really is sub-par

Food was lousy, service was rude, and prices were high.
Can anyone tell me if these are the same people who have the pizza place on Main st.
That was the place the feds placed a camera on the pole across the street and tapped the phones .
I wonder if the money to open this place came from flipping houses or from AMEX watch scams.

Gulf Gate Foodie Treasures:
1. the Sarasota Brewing Company has been serving craft beer before it was craft beer and microbrews before there were microbrews: an old standby!
2. "Oriental Food and Gifts Import" asian food market on Gateway is a well-maintained grocery with very good house made kimchee, nice value dried soba noodles, and a variety of frozen fish cake. bonus: great sake selection
3. had some wonderful house-smoked mackerel from the russian deli two weeks ago, must visit and try the pierogi!
4. Jim's Small Batch Pastry is an underdog to look for at the far east end of Gateway plaza. Macarons like sweet clouds!

Thanks for always finding us a great new spot! Only issue, I found too much garlic in the Carbonara sauce and as a true Italian, we all know garlic doesn't belong there! Loved the pizza of course and sipping my vodka and tonic. We're snow birds and just arrived, catching up on all the restaurants. Any ideas for brunch?

I first saw this Gulf Gate gem a few days after they had opened. I ventured in during lunch time and if you had told me at that moment that I was in Gulf Gate I would not have believed you. An ultra modern bar; the wine enclosure that looks like a superhero is going to come out at anytime and a great menu that makes it hard to just pick one item. A must for those of you who have lunch meetings or take out clients for dinner.. Thanks to Steve, Nick and Tracy for a great new place.

A menu well done... an atmosphere to match! All the finest things you'd find at more than double the price. Nick, Tracy & Steve... job well done. As for the wait ... from scratch takes time. This isn't your mainstream assembly line kitchen. Worth the wait everytime!!!! All gourmet and quaint bistro restaurants take note... the bar has been raised!

I like to see all these comments because I think it is so nice to have a trendy spot in Gulf Gate- there are a lot of bars but this is polished and a cool club feel later at night but even at lunch it is nice to sit in a Manhattan style place without Manhattan prices---

AND..by the way- Patty';s on Main is gone- new American Fusion is on the way---WHY didn't she listen and use good judgment--- Patricks owns the name and certainly has the following-- well, maybe better luck with this new one-

I took a client to Piatti the other day for lunch and everything was absolutely perfect! Great spot with a refined twist!

I am absolutely loving the chic bar set-up they've got going on! It's a perfect girls night spot, i.e. cocktails from the extensive bar and a slice or two of fabulous pizza! I'm partial to the bloody mary tini, but let's be honest the bartender there cam concoct just about anything you crave!

Hip, Trendy, and an amazing Chef. The drinks are incredible too! A must try!
