As we worked on this issue of Sarasota Magazine’s Charity Register, I couldn’t help but consider the abundance of generosity that exists in our community. It’s far from hyperbole to characterize Sarasota as a place where philanthropy abounds. Our collective commitment to supporting the needy—individuals as well as worthwhile organizations—is profound.

After spending a bit of time in Sarasota, an uninformed but observant visitor would soon sense the distinct spirit of altruism that resides here. Chances are that visitor would be impressed by the range and depth of that caring relative to our size. For sure we can do and give more but, when compared to other communities, Sarasota’s generosity is quite unique. Therein lays a societal problem: Our degree of compassion shouldn’t be so special.

If only it were more common. And if only we could package and export it around the world. Just dreaming. But I’d like to think that as Sarasota’s visibility continues to increase and more observant visitors arrive, that—perhaps along with their tans and fond vacation memories--they’ll bring home a sense of our commitment to philanthropy.

Actually, maybe you can help export our spirit of altruism by sharing your copy of Charity Register with guests and picking up one to send to friends and family members who live elsewhere. Include a note that reflects not only your pride in what we do as a community but also a suggestion that the person you’re sending it to get involved philanthropically in their own community. We can’t change the world, but we can consciously share our sense of giving with others.
